About

I’m Elise Marlow, and most weekdays I work behind the scenes for a small estate-auction company in Minneapolis. My job is part research, part photography, and part detective work.

I handle things after they have already had a life: a soft-sided case with a repaired handle, a watch that was worn every day for twenty years, a handbag with a lining still intact, a brooch tucked away in its original box.

That work has changed the way I shop.

I do not get very excited by an item just because it is new, expensive, or everywhere online. I notice the parts people usually discover later: the seams, the closures, the weight of the hardware, the way a material changes after being carried, dropped, cleaned, packed, or loved a little too hard.

Ruby Roxanne Designs grew from that habit of paying attention.

I started writing because people around me kept asking for a second opinion before buying something. Not a dramatic verdict. Just an honest one. Is this bag going to become a favorite or a burden? Is this gift actually thoughtful? Will these sunglasses be comfortable after an hour outside? Does this little object solve a real problem, or is it only good at looking convincing in a product photo?

I do not believe everyone needs fewer things. I just think the things we choose should feel good to live with.

Here, I write about accessories, useful gifts, travel pieces, desk finds, bags, watches, small personal items, and the occasional object that simply makes an ordinary day nicer. Some will be practical. Some will be beautiful. The ones I like best usually manage to be both.

There is no need for every purchase to become a forever item. But when something is well made, easy to use, and still feels like yours after the novelty fades, that is worth talking about.

That is what I am doing here: noticing the details before they become your problem.
